You may have realized by now that I'm a bit into birthdays. Specifically, I'm a bit into my kids birthdays. Which they LOVED when they were little! And they still sort of love now. They definitely love the presents and the cake. They've just become a little less fond of my penchant for birthday "themes" ...
This is how it usually goes ... about a month before the actual birthday, I ask my kids what "theme" they want for their birthday party. When they were little, they would enthusiastically tell me "Thomas the Tank Engine" or "Fish" or something. In fact, they often were starting to give this some serious thought the week following the previous birthday ... in fact, my 10-year old still does!
As the two oldest have become teenagers, the response is a little less exuberant. They still want the party and the cake and the pressies, just not the theme thing so much. This year, my daughter said that she just wanted a birthday-birthday.
Awww, come on!!!!!!! What fun is that?
So, I chose the theme for her ... any guesses?
She's always been a horsey girl - and although she is learning English riding, deep down she's a cowgirl at heart!
So a Western Theme it was ... a variety of small horses joined her on the Mantel of Honour this week!
And the jar that usually holds colour-coordinated jelly beans held sunflower seeds this time ...
The kids table had a similar look to it ...
The goody bags contained sunflower seeds, Wagon Wheels (the edible kind), Jolly Rancher candy and a horse eraser.
My old cowboy boots came in handy on the front porch!
And you know what? I think she ended up getting a kick out of it all! Her friends were impressed, which I think made her see my "themes" in a new light. Either way, it's fun to do - as much a present for myself and for her!
Do your birthday parties always have a theme?
