Valentine's Day Ideas

In my house, we celebrate just about everything! And when I say we, I really mean me. There's nothing about which I won't make a bit of a fuss. My long-suffering husband has pretty much just given up, and the children are used to it (and have actually come to expect it). But this upcoming week is a bit much ... Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day all within the same week ... it's enough to scare off a chronic celebration-maker such as myself! So, I decided to keep it pretty simple.

We ordered Chinese food last night for Chinese New Year. We'll be having pancakes on Shrove Tuesday tomorrow. Traditionally, Ash Wednesday is a fast day, which means not eating meat ... so a vegetarian meal it will be. And then Thursday is Valentine's Day! For Valentine's Day, I go to a bit more effort.

We'll start the day with our annual Valentine's Breakfast ...

Our breakfast includes heart-shaped eggs (baked in a heart-shaped whoopie-pie pan for about 15 minutes at 400 degrees) ...

This year we'll also be adding heart-shaped bacon ... I came across this brilliant idea from thepapermama.com on Pinterest.

Bacon Hearts, such a fun twist for breakfast. 400F - 18 min or so.

Before the kids get up, I'll make them their red lunch. I know, the food dye is crazy, but we only do this for Valentine's and St. Patrick's Day. This tradition actually started a few years ago on St. Patrick's Day (in green, of course), and the kids loved it so much I couldn't dare not continue it!

This is a photo of last year's lunch ... which contains WAY more sugar than I'd normally allow. I'm going to switch up the Kool-Aid this year for cranberry juice ... and replace the jell-o with homemade strawberry apple sauce!

I'll send cupcakes to school for my daughter's Valentine's Party ...

Last year, she gave these out as her Valentine's .. you can get the instructions HERE.

This year, we fell in love with this free printable ... thanks be to the internet ...

Fish Bowl Valentine

And this brilliant one for teachers ...

We spent the snow day last Friday printing and cutting them out!

We'll also be having a romantic dinner for 5 ... featuring a table set in red and a family favourite  ... Enchilada Lasagna ... you can get the recipe HERE.

Are you a celebrator like me? What do you do to mark Valentine's?

  1. Are those Canada mittens? How cute! I love the heart shaped bacon & eggs too!!!

In past years, I've made a heart shaped pizza w/sundried tomato foccacia and all-red ingredients (red sauce, pepperoni, tomatoes, red bell pepper, etc.). This year we're going out for dinner and a movie, but I am planning to make chocolate covered strawberries and I bought a mini bottle of champagne to go with. :)
